It was the 2019 US Open and defending champion, Naomi Osaka was the top seed and one of the favorites to win the title. The Japanese tennis star had a tough opening encounter against Anna Blinkova, defeating her in three sets. Further, the 25-year-old soon found the rhythm and dominated her second-round match. The third-round match was a special one for Osaka. She was up against local sensation Coco Gauff, who had received a wildcard entry into the main draw of the tournament.

Gauff was just 15 when she was up against Osaka at the US Open. The former’s dream run at the tournament was ended by Osaka, who proved far superior to the American. Additionally, Osaka inflicted a bagel on Gauff, defeating her in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Recently, the Japanese star opened up about her encounter with Gauff.

Earlier this week, the new episode of Mountain top Conversations podcast dropped featuring Osaka. The 25-year-old talked about various subjects – from her motherhood to her career.

During the podcast, Osaka was asked about the ‘Mountaintop Moment’ in her life. Replying to this question, she stated that she had one of the best memories of playing against Coco Gauff at the 2019 US Open. Further, she went on add, “I grew up in the same area as her. And I’ve watched her play with her dad, and I knew that she was going to be great. So it’s just really emotional, just to play her in the Arthur Ashe stadium.”

Talking about post-match reactions after defeating Gauff, Osaka revealed, “And just, I remember inviting her to talk after the match and just feeling really emotional about it. Because I felt like, this is what sports is about.”
