Columbia University has become the first Ivy League to drop the requirement of SAT/ACT scores to secure admission. Undergraduates will no longer need to submit any standardized test scores and this decision stems from the University’s decision to honor students from all backgrounds and acknowledge their multi-faceted abilities. While the world and Twitter have been divided on this issue, Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian has taken a standpoint of his own on the debate.

Recently, Founder and CEO of YCombinator, Garry Tan posted his opinions about this move by Columbia. He thinks that this move will rather hurt the ideology of promoting diversity than manifest it further. The WTA legend’s husband, Alexis Ohanian posted his stance on the issue as a comment to Garry’s post and the co-founder of Reddit has some very interesting statements to make.

Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian gives a go-ahead to Columbia University

Garry Tan posted a quote from former US President John F. Kennedy which says, “The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic”.

He further continues, “Testing doesn’t hurt diversity. It helps. Those who seek to cure fevers should not destroy their thermometers.” This statement is a hint to how test scores actually test the merit of students on an equal level and does not base itself on prejudices. Tan thinks that testing is a rather standardized procedure for gauging the merit of applicants.

To that, Alexis Ohanian says, “This is funny because fevers are a response from the body’s immune system. You don’t actually want to cure a fever, you want to heal the patient.” To Alexis, the sole reason that inequality exists is rooted deep inside the society and to cure it, you don’t need a thermometer or a testing method. Alexis believes that the ultimate goal should not be to do away with inequality but to actually solve the problem at its very root.

Thus, Ohanian is in full support of this move from Columbia University if anything. Whether or not this method proves to be beneficial in the future, only time can tell. Till then, the debate over breaking this age-old norm of test score acceptability will continue to rage social media.
