Immediately after her debut, she rapidly climbed the ladder of success, becoming one of the biggest names in tennis. While Evert enjoyed success on the court, she failed to reciprocate it in her personal life. Despite being addressed as of the greatest players of all time, the 67-year-old also has the tag of someone with three failed marriages.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion recently featured in the CBS Sunday Morning show. Interacting with renowned journalist Tracy Smith, Evert started by asserting, “There’s a price to pay for everything in life.”

Evert, within two years of her debut, became a two-time Grand Slam champion. Keeping up her performance, she steadily climbed to the top of the rankings in the third year. Recalling the phase, Evert went ahead saying, “I think my fame at a young age, I really didn’t get to have the freedom to develop the authentic me at a young age. I didn’t go to college. I joined the tour right away.”

Stardom rightly comes with numerous benefits. Being one of the greatest players, Evert was not immune from these benefits either. Going ahead in the conversation, she asserted, “I think people again are always told you’re the greatest and pat it on the back and people can’t say no to them.”

Supporting her words with an example, she further added, “I don’t think I have ever gotten a ticket in my life. Policemen have pulled me over many times and seen that I’m Chris Evert. They go. I’m such a big fan of yours, I’m going to let you go.”

Opening up about the dark side of stardom

Similar to any other famous athlete, Evert also enjoyed the feeling of stardom. However, little did she know that this stardom also had a dark side. Facing the truth, she admitted, “I think when that happens, years and years and years and years, I think you become a little entitled, and a little enabled.” “I’m the first to admit it,” she further added.

Even though unwillingly, professional commitments often affect one’s personal life. Similar was the case with Evert. To date, Evert has suffered three failed marriages. First with former tennis player John Lloyd, followed by Alpine Ski racer Andy Mill, and finally with former Australian golfer Greg Norman.

While she enjoyed the perks of stardom, it still affected her personal life. “I feel like that affected my relationship with people, and with my marriages. I think you pay a price,” Evert ended.
