Tennis sensation Maria Sharapova recently spoke about her long-time rival Serena Williams. The Russian who is down 2-20 in the head-to-head race with Serena, opened up about her recent meeting with the American champion during a match in New York.

Serena Williams has had a number of on-court rivalries in her career spanning close to three decades. Even though a number of players have tried coming close to her, it is the 23-time Grand Slam champion that ended up victorious against every player in the locker room.

In her long list of on-court rivals, one of the most played against opponent is Sharapova. Even though Sharapova trails Serena by a big margin, the tennis world always waited for the duo to face each other in a slam final.

Maria Sharapova calls Serena Williams her toughest opponent

Sharapova was recently invited for a Spotify podcast named ‘Never stand Still’. In conversation with podcaster Dan Schulman, the Russian talked to the host about the similarities between Serena’s game and her own. Adding on to that, Maria instantly made a mention of her recent meeting with Williams in New York.

“We just saw each other in a match in New York a few weeks ago. We were discussing how old we are now compared to the US Open final. She was like, ‘oh goodness we are up there.’ And I was like, ‘Woah! You still got it girl.'”

Sharapova’s last match on the WTA tour came at the 2020 Australian Open, where she suffered a first round loss Donna Vekic.

The long history of Sharapova and Williams

Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams’ rivalry stretch across two decades. The two first played in 2004 at the Miami Open. Even though Sharapova stood strong, it was Serena who won the match in straight sets.

The two again faced each other at the 2004 Wimbledon final. Seeking a revenge for her previous loss, this time it was Sharapova who went ahead and defeat the defending champion in straight sets. The Wimbledon victory was followed by another win for Sharapova, this time in the finals of the WTA year-end Championships.

Celebrating her win, little did Sharapova know that it would be her last win over the legendary American. Both stars shared the court numerous times over the years but it was Serena’s domination all along. The duo last played in the opening round of the 2019 US Open, with Serena beating Sharapova 6-1,6-1.
