It’s been 22 years since Serena and Venus Williams made history (for the first time). In 2001, the iconic tennis duo became the first sisters to contest a major tournament final as they went up against each other at the US Open. It’s also been 22 years since the Miami Dolphins clinched a post-season berth in consecutive seasons. On that night in Flushing Meadows, Venus Williams was on Cloud 9 after emerging victorious. And thanks to the Dolphins last night, the seven-time Grand Slam champion was on Cloud 9 once again!

In a minority ownership journey that started in 2009—when the Miami Dolphins were valued at just $1.2 billion—has grown along with the Williams sisters. As per Forbes, the NFL franchise’s evaluation as of now is a staggering $5.2 billion. To commemorate a playoff journey that’s just starting, Venus took to social media to express her pride in her team.

The Miami Dolphins entered their second straight playoff in style when Jason Sanders executed a game-winning field goal as the clock went off. With the Hard Rock Stadium buzzing with excitement as the Dolphins overcame the Dallas Cowboys 22-20, Williams joined in on the celebrations. Sporting a Louis Vuitton Dolphins jersey, she posted updates on her Instagram story and tweeted on X, writing, “We clinched the playoffs! @MiamiDolphins” And she wasn’t alone in her excitement.

Fellow American tennis player Reilly Opelka was also part of the Miami Dolphins hype train as the troop paraded around the stadium. The Dolphins even reposted Venus’ story, which the former tennis player reposted again, writing, “#proud!” While Miami may have clinched a playoff berth, their regular season isn’t over yet. With two games to go, they can clinch the AFC East crown by winning either, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2008.

Whether or not the Dolphins will head into the playoffs with a crown, only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: Venus Williams will be standing by them as a proud owner throughout the journey. Why wouldn’t she, considering the Dolphins helped kickstart her and Serena’s entrepreneurial journey?

The Dolphins helped lay the foundation for the Williams sisters’ investment journey

After making history in 2001, Venus and Serena Williams made history again in 2009, becoming the first female African Americans to hold an ownership stake in an NFL franchise. After climbing on board, Serena told People, “Having spent so much of my childhood in the area, being involved with a staple of Miami culture is a huge honor. We look forward to many championships and much success together with the Miami Dolphins.”

Venus echoed her sister’s sentiment, and although championships haven’t come Miami’s way yet, the 2023 season is definitely a step toward them. Getting this exposure to being part franchise owners has helped the Williams sisters carve their own ownership paths.

Be it Venus’ clothing line EleVen or plant-based superfood nutrition company Happy Viking. Or even Serena’s wellness brand, Will Perform, and Serena Ventures, the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s venture capital fund. Earlier this year, the sister act even joined the ownership group of the Los Angeles Golf Club, one of the teams in Tiger Woods’ TGL. All of it started with that one decision in 2009 to invest in the Miami Dolphins.
