Coco Gauff’s attempt to surprise parents falls flat on her face

This reigning US Open champion couldn’t attend the last Olympics due to contracting Covid-19. Therefore, the Paris Olympics has been one of the most exciting journeys in her professional career. However, Gauff didn’t know that she would hold the American flag on the boat trip on the river Seine during the opening ceremony. She was notified a week prior, which excited her, as she wanted to share the news with her parents as soon as possible. However, her parents knew about it before Gauff since they had to submit their names to security by Tuesday to receive the news first.

I thought I was gonna surprise them on the phone, and [my mom] was like, ‘Yeah, I already knew. So I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s great.’ But I’m glad that they’ll be able to come and be here. I know they’re excited. I was very emotional when I was talking to my mom about it.”
