The husband of Serena Williams, Alexis Ohanian, is one of the staunchest proponents of women’s sports in the US. Over the years, the Seven Seven Six founder has spoken in favor of pay equality in professional sports on numerous occasions. He has also taken action as he has invested in a women’s soccer team and has made huge strides with the club. However, did you know there was a time when the cofounder of Reddit was oblivious to the existence of women’s sports?
Like most sports enthusiasts around the world, Ohanian had an inclination towards men’s sports while losing out on a different perspective of professional sports. However, after meeting the legendary American tennis star and falling in love, Ohanian took a special interest in women’s sports. His interest gradually turned into a passion after his wife pointed out the pay disparity when she said, “Not until they pay her what she’s worth”, when quizzed about Olympia’s future in soccer.

Massar asked Ohanian about his love for sports. Ohanian stated that he had always loved sports as a child. But he confessed that he was not always into watching women’s division of the sports he fancied. He wasn’t even too fond of tennis until he met his wife and became a fan two years into their marriage.
Ohanian said, “I did not always love women’s sports, though. To be clear, I jumped on this bandwagon really when I met my wife. That was the first time I really watched tennis as a sport. But I really went whole hog in 2019; now I’m really into it.”

Ohanian’s investment in women’s soccer
Alexis Ohanian is not only the co-founder of Reddit, but he is also a big proponent of investing in lucrative and era-defining ventures. He was true to his words when he said he jumped on the bandwagon of women’s sports. Ohanian invested a staggering amount of $100 million into the NWSL soccer team, Angel City FC. He even stated that the motivation behind his investment was Alex Morgan, who currently plays for San Diego Wave FC.
Ohanian is true to his nature as an investor. As soon as he found his interest, he made a plan to become a part of it and take it to new heights. However, he made it clear that his investment was a shrewd business move rather than an emotional one, as he sees immense potential in women’s soccer’s global appeal.
