Alexis Ohanian never grew up loving soccer; he played it more out of obligation than passion, especially since his parents didn’t let him try football until high school. But everything changed after the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Watching with his daughter Olympia, Ohanian dreamed aloud of her playing on that stage one day. That moment pushed him to invest in women’s sports, starting with Angel City FC. Now a part-owner of Chelsea’s women’s team and the team has done a domestic treble, Ohanian reveals his passion has grown so strong!

Alexis Ohanian, joined by wife Serena Williams and Olympia, was in attendance at Wembley to witness Chelsea’s commanding 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup final yesterday, a victory that sealed a flawless domestic treble. The Blues capped off the season unbeaten on home soil, having already clinched the League Cup against the blue side of Manchester and secured their 6th consecutive Women’s Super League title.

Despite their domestic dominance, Chelsea’s European ambitions fell short as they were ousted in the Champions League SF by defending champions Barcelona, suffering an 8-2 aggregate defeat. Still, with a strong core and growing global support, including Ohanian as one of their latest high-profile investors, the club looks ahead to the next season with renewed hope and ambition.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Ohanian added, “Chelsea is very unique. These are the queens of global soccer, and they’ve got the trophy case to prove it. This is a very special club. The sky is the limit.” He further added, “You heard our president say this club is unapologetically ambitious – I want to get that tattooed on me,” showing just how deeply he’s committed to the club’s mission.

Beyond his admiration, the 42-year-old has lofty ambitions. “That is what we’re trying to build here – the best team in the world and at the forefront of women’s sport. This will be a billion-dollar franchise one day. I hope my dollars, my pounds, can go towards that and especially back home in America. This is going to be America’s team,” he stated confidently.

Even Manager Sonia Bompastor called the victory the best way to welcome Chelsea’s newest investor, praising the family’s genuine enthusiasm and strong mentality. “They were here to show their support. You can feel from the beginning they have the right mentality coming into Chelsea. This was the best way to welcome them, with this game, this final, and this result,” she added.

Serena Williams, too, applauded her husband’s new venture, marking another powerful partnership in the world of sports.

A few days before the FA Cup final, the buzz around Ohanian’s investment grew louder when he proudly shared the news on X. Reposting an article from “The Times” confirming he had acquired a 10% stake in Chelsea Women, $26.5 million, he wrote, “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before—and I’m doing it again.” In a follow-up post, he reiterated his excitement and his goal to expand the club’s fan base in the U.S.: “I’m proud to announce that I’m joining @ChelseaFCW as an investor and board member. I’m honored for the chance to help this iconic club become America’s favorite @BarclaysWSL team and much, much more.”

A day after the big reveal, the Reddit co-founder took to IG to share his excitement with a powerful update. “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before—as the founding control owner of @weareangelcity—and I’m doing it again. I’m proud to announce that I’m joining @chelseafcw as a minority owner and board member. I’m honored for the chance to help this iconic club become America’s favorite @barclayswsl team and much, much more,” he wrote, reinforcing his commitment to elevating women’s sports globally.

Reacting with pride and affection, the 23-time GS winner, Serena Williams, shared her husband’s post on her IG stories, captioning it, “ANOTHER ONE FOR @776FUND AND @ALEXISOHANIAN 🥰🥰.” Her message reflected the family’s unified support and excitement for this new chapter with Chelsea Women.

In the same IG post, Alexis Ohanian added even more depth to his vision: “These players are rewriting the game. Undefeated season. Eyes on the treble. But this isn’t just about winning titles. It’s about finally matching their talent with the resources, visibility, and respect they deserve. I’ve been right about this before and I couldn’t be more excited.”

He concluded with a heartfelt nod to the club’s leadership as well: “And you know we got the entire family READY. Thank you to Aki Mandhar, our club President, and her team for this care package for the girls — her integrity and focus on a standard of excellence were a huge factor in why this was such a ‘Hell Yes’-type investment. Bio officially updated. See you all SUNDAY! Up the Chels!“

With Chelsea Women now on his roster, it’s only a matter of time before the team asserts its dominance, not just in the UK but across Europe. A Champions League title next year? What’s your take?
