Certain stars in professional wrestling have become legends in what they do. They may not be wrestlers, but their contribution to pro wrestling has impacted the business. One such known and loved person currently works in AEW and is nearing the end of their contract.

That being said, they are hoping for some good news from Tony Khan regarding their contract renewal. Fans and experts in the business adore this person and how they made pro wrestling entertaining, not just to see but also to hear.

Regarding ring-side commentators, no one is loved and respected more than Jim Ross. The 72-year-old wrestling commentator has been in the industry since the early 1980s. Known in the WWE as “Good Ol’ JR,” he moved to AEW in 2019 and has continued to work there. During his time with the WWE, he coined multiple phrases that have now been etched into the minds of wrestling fans.

Regarding the WWE, Ross was a major part of their early success. Most of his commentary work was in the WWE. However, in 2019, he felt underutilized, which resulted in him not renewing his contract. According to Ross, he had only two bookings in 2018, despite him asking for more.

Ross later revealed that people around Vince McMahon didn’t believe he could continue to do what he did. He urged McMahon that he could still perform play-by-play commentary, but McMahon didn’t listen. Once his contract ended, he departed the WWE and joined AEW the same year.

In AEW, Ross worked as a commentator and senior advisor. Initially, he began with AEW Dynamite as a full-time commentator and part-time for Rampage. He would go on to switch to full-time for Rampage in 2022. The revered commentator has suffered a setback in his personal life due to his poor health condition.

Jim Ross’s poor health and hiatus

While working in the WWE and AEW, Ross has suffered from health issues. Ross has faced health issues such as bone cancer, which is now in remission. High blood sugar nearing 300. Mental health issues due to stress led him to take some time off before returning ahead of AEW’s Worlds End.

Despite everything, Ross continues to part-take in AEW’s commentary team. His work has impacted the industry greatly, with some of the most iconic lines for wrestlers being coined by him.
