Tonga ended their 14-year tenure with New Japan Pro Wrestling with a spectacular tag team bout in Sapporo. He and his brother Tanga Loa battled Hikuleo and El Phantasmo while boss Jado watched above them.
It is from his father Haku that Tama Tonga inherited his wrestling background. Beginning his career in sumo, Haku later transitioned to All Japan Pro Wrestling, where he is gained notoreity. He went on to become Haku, Meng, and King Tonga.
Tonga has previously stated his desire to join a wrestling business in the United States so that he could finally spend time with his family after years of constant travel. Tonga opted to remain in Japan despite conversations with WWE after the expiration of his contract with New Japan last year. Before he made his relocation official, he looked for another year.
While in Japan, Tonga was a vital cog in the wheel of The Bullet Club, which included stars like Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows, and AJ Styles. Not only that, but he is a member of the Johnson-Maivia and Anoa’i-Fatu extended wrestling lines via his Haku family connections.
