Amidst Numerous Opinions of Not Being Fit as AEW Boss, Tony Khan Picks 42-Year-Old Ex-WWE Star as His Successor

Tony Khan is known for setting up the only pro wrestling organization that could stand on equal footing with WWE. AEW isn’t a mere challenge, but a significant threat to Vince McMahon’s goliath sports entertainment company. 

However, after four years of AEW’s birth, several mouths and fingers are questioning Tony Khan’s capabilities. While Khan did a great job at assembling and running the show, fans suggest that his leadership has become inept. Amid all this backlash. Khan recently announced his successor in a recent interview.

Tony Khan created the AEW from scratch when WWE had already completed two decades. WWE had several rivals in the market, but none of them even scratched its market value. However, Khan blew the wind out of WWE with a bang in 2019 when he came up with AEW. The newest rival in town saw a sharp rise in its popularity. In fact, WWE witnessed the exodus of several celebrated WWE superstars, like Paige (Saraya), Rusev (Miro), and many more.

AEW gave an alternative to both the audience and pro wrestlers. Several wrestlers who were on the fringes of WWE arrived in AEW and got the recognition they deserved. While the initial acceleration of AEW was spectacular, it has now started to lose momentum because of a lack of leadership. In light of this, Khan cleared the air by announcing his next torchbearer.

 

As the PWInsider highlighted Khan’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The post said, “Tony Khan has stated that should something happen to him where he cannot run AEW, his father should turn to Bryan Danielson. What an endorsement.” Bryan Danielson is none other than ex-WWE megastar Daniel Bryan. 

The 42-year-old was one of WWE’s most loved stars who had to quit because of an injury. However, he didn’t receive his previous limelight after his return, and thus, switched to AEW. Tony Khan found a new friend and reliable partner in Bryan after Cody Rhodes left his side and joined WWE. 

Khan had a glowing endorsement on Bryan and his capabilities.

Bryan Danielson made his debut in AEW in 2021 and instantly became a hit with the crowd. Danielson played a pivotal role in several feuds against the likes of MJF, Kenny Omega, Kazuchika Okada, and many more. According to Tony Khan, “Bryan and I have had a very close relationship since he came to AEW.” Khan praised the intelligence of Bryan Danielson and said he loves discussing strategies with him.

Khan also acknowledged that despite working with several people, he still finds Danielson very remarkable. Tony Khan also noted that the respect is two-way, and it really fills him with joy. The exodus of Cody Rhodes from AEW came as an enormous shock to many. Rhodes was one of the founding wrestlers of AEW, and his loss proved to be very heavy for Tony Khan.
