From Cameo to Stunt Double Roles, Exploring Rey Mysterio’s Hollywood Appearances Ahead of New Animated Series Release

Rey Mysterio needs no introduction. The masked Luchador has captivated an entire generation of WWE fans with his acrobatics and underdog storylines. Despite having a short stature, the 48-year-old has proved he can go toe-to-toe with the big guys in the WWE. Mysterio’s popularity isn’t just due to his in-ring prowess; it is also because of his colorful masks that sell like hotcakes. As WWE fans, we know the former WWE champion’s work within the ring, but did you know of his work on the silver screen?

Ahead of Rey’s new animated TV show, let’s take a look at the movies the leader of the Latino World Order has starred in.

Rey Mysterio’s Hollywood filmography

The very first Hollywood media that Rey starred in was a documentary TV show for Eastern Championship Wrestling. Mysterio appeared in three episodes in 1995 in the show that ran from 1993-2000s. The ECW show featured names like Tommy Dreamer, Terry Funk, The Sandman, Tazz, Sabu, and many more icons of the industry. This would be his start, but this was not the big Hollywood movie WWE stars wanted to be in. That would come in 2000.

Ready To Rumble from 2000 is one of the best-known ‘So-bad-it’s-good’ pro wrestling movies. Based on WCW and not the WWE, the movie gained a cult following despite being a flop at the box office. The main selling point was the plethora of WCW megastars featured in the movie. The likes of Goldberg, Booker T., Diamond Dallas Page, Sting, Randy Savage, and many more. Among these was a short cameo by Mysterio playing himself. A little-known fact about this movie is that it was John Cena‘s first media debut as a background extra. This was before he even signed with the WWE.

Did you know that Mysterio was Freddy Kruger’s stunt double? Yes, not in the original, but in the 2003 crossover movie Freddy vs. Jason. He also played an uncredited jumper in the movie. He would next appear in one episode in 2005 on the Children’s TV show Ministry of Mayhem. The show featured games and cartoons for kid’s entertainment and education. In 2015, his voice-acting career began with the first being The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age Smackdown.

The WWE Hall of Famer also lent his voice to the series Victor and Valentino for one episode. His new venture on Cartoon Network Latin America is another voice acting role. Titled Rey Mysterio vs. La Oscuridad or Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness, the show follows the adventures of Mysterio. The show will feature the WWE Hall of Famer’s iconic moves in larger-than-life set pieces combined with fantasy shenanigans. The first trailer dropped on November 20, 2023, with the release date yet to be mentioned.

However, despite having earned some significant work in the entertainment industry, things have not been rosy for the WWE star inside the squared circle. He has had to deal with a plethora of emotions ranging from sorrow, fury, despair, etc.

Despite the new TV show’s release, the past few weeks have been bad for Mysterio’s fans. Not only did he lose his United States Championship title to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel 2023, but he also suffered a betrayal at the hands of his teammate Santos Escobar.
