Pro wrestling is a business that has no permanent friends or eternal enemies. People who vowed to never work for a promoter eventually again bury the hatchet and come back. The world of wrestling has thrown up many strange alliances over the years, but one particular team up left everyone’s mouth wide open.

WWE was involved in a heated rivalry with a rival wrestling company named, World Championship Wrestling (WCW), during the 1990s, known as ‘The Monday Night Wars’.

Eric Bischoff, in-charge of WCW, was the scourge of Vince McMahon. Bischoff did everything in his power to undermine McMahon’s company. He went as far as giving away results of WWE RAW on Nitro, since RAW was pre-taped.

However, when WWE bought out their competition in 2001, Bischoff appeared on Monday Night RAW and hugged his former bitter rival on-screen. This infamous moment left everybody watching, stunned.

Bischoff recalls meeting with Vince McMahon before his RAW appearance

Vince McMahon welcomed Eric Bischoff with a smile and open arms on an episode of RAW in July 2002. It was a shocking image since both the men had spent the best part of the previous decade trying to put the other out of business. Not only this, McMahon also announced his former rival as the new General Manager of RAW.

Bischoff recalled meeting with McMahon just before his WWE debut, saying he didn’t feel nervous.

He says he was sitting in the limo hiding, because Vince didn’t want anybody to see him and they wanted it to be a big surprise.

Bischoff said in his 83 weeks podcast, “He came back to my limo and jumped in, asked me how I was feeling and asked me if I was nervous. I was excited. I wasn’t nervous. Not nervous at all. Vince was like, What do you mean, you’re not nervous at all? Damn? I said, Vince, I’m excited. That’s not the same thing as nervous. I’m good, huh? That was it. Shook my hand.

He added McMahon asked him to give him a big hug on-stage.

The WCW legend explained, “Next time I saw him, it was in the entrance and I shook his hand. You know, made a big deal out of that. He wanted to do that. He told me that. So when I get out there. He said, give me a big hug. I give him a big hug. And it was long. It was really long.”

Bischoff also says that their meeting at the entrance sounds ‘romantic’.
