John Cena rose to stardom during his run as the guy in WWE for almost a decade. His babyface persona made him popular among wrestling fans as well as the mainstream audience. He portrayed a character who would overcome the odds and save the day and asked his fans to never give up. Wind back to WWE’s first boom period and this was Hulk Hogan.
The Hulkster was WWE’s popular babyface and played the all-conquering hero way before Cena. In many ways, we can say that Hogan’s character was the inspiration for what Cena became. As such, many fans also wanted to see the two face each other in the ring in a dream match.

Both Hogan and Cena have been part of some big matches in WWE history over the years but sadly never got to compete against each other. The circumstances for this match may not be ideal now, but that wasn’t the case in 2010. In a live chat session with WWE over a decade ago, Cena once talked about if he wanted to wrestle Hogan and then threw shade at him at the same time.
John Cena took a dig at Hulk Hogan for ‘wasting’ time
John Cena and Hulk Hogan both headed WWE at different times and will go down as two of the greatest wrestlers ever for the company. Between them, they have 22 World Championships and multiple WrestleMania main events. The two enjoy global fandom and drove WWE’s success in different eras. It would have made for some great TV had the two got the opportunity to wrestle against each other.

Today the proposition of a John Cena-Hulk Hogan match is unlikely. But 12 years ago, it was one of the dream matches that could’ve happened. Although both shared the ring a few times, they never squared off against each other. In 2009 Hulk Hogan signed with TNA (Impact Wrestling) to much hype. Shortly after that in 2010, John Cena joined a live chat session on WWE.com and answered a bunch of questions. During the session, Cena was asked whether he was interested in wrestling Hogan.
Cena responded with a brutal dig at Hogan and TNA all in one go. The Doctor of Thuganomics replied, “Yes. I just don’t think that’s going to happen right now. He’s too busy wasting his time.” It seems Cena was unhappy over Hogan’s decision to join TNA when a move to WWE could’ve resulted in a massive match for the ages.
Moreover, in 2009 Cena and Hogan were close to being booked for a match at WrestleMania, but WWE scrapped the plans after Hogan had to get surgery for his back injury. But after Hogan joined TNA, he showed he had a little more left in him when it came to in-ring action. Indeed, Cena, like many other fans, wondered what could’ve been had The Immortal one signed with WWE back then.

These factors could’ve been the reason for the Hollywood star’s uncharacteristic outburst on the Hulkster. With Hogan’s wrestling days probably over and Cena being more of a Hollywood star, fans may never get to see this dream match become a reality.
