In 2005, Hogan was booked to face another WWE icon, Shawn Michaels, at SummerSlam. Before the match, it was planned that both the wrestlers could work as faces, an idea that Hogan refused. This led to Michaels reluctantly turning heel. Over the course of their feud, the two had a lot of disagreements on how to do business.
Hogan also refused to put Michaels over, which didn’t sit well with the former D-Generation X member. When the two finally met in the ring, Michaels would hilariously oversell Hogan’s moves to get back at him.
Former WWE manager Bruce Prichard narrated how the two veterans worked themselves into a shoot and how Michaels’ overselling during the match became a positive thing.
Prichard said Shawn Michaels overselling for Hulk Hogan was entertaining
After his Hall of Fame induction, Hulk Hogan returned to the ring at WrestleMania 21 for a brief encounter with former WWE wrestler Muhammed Hassan. He would soon form a tag team with Shawn Michaels and the two would wrestle together at pay-per-views. But after their win over Carlito and Kurt Angle, HBK blindsided Hogan with a Sweet Chin Music. This set up a feud between the two icons which would culminate at SummerSlam.

Two of WWE’s biggest entertainers would square off against each other. However, due to the differences between the two legends over how the feud should play out, the match will be best remembered for Michaels’ antics.
Bruce Prichard shared his thoughts on the infamous match on the ‘Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard’ podcast.
He said, “The match was highly entertaining because of Shawn overselling s**t and going f*****g nuts and almost doing a parody of a Hulk match from 20 years ago. So to that, the entertainment value of it, it was incredibly entertaining. That may have been Shawn’s nod to say ‘Hey, I’m gonna go out here and I’m gonna do this and I’m gonna make you remember it because of my antics.”
Prichard also revealed that it was Vince McMahon to pull the plug on the feud after one match. He added, “Vince pulled the plug. Vince was unsure even before the match if he wanted more matches. It was Vince’s call.”

The hype around the match was off the charts, with WWE doing an excellent job of building up the clash. An iconic match between the two generational stars turned out to be a hilarious but entertaining encounter. Afterward, Hogan took a hiatus from WWE and Shawn Michaels turned face to continue his run with WWE.
