WWE has featured celebrities across many eras on its programming. Right from the first ever WrestleMania, WWE has made celebrity appearances a staple feature of its biggest events. Last year fans saw rap star Bad Bunny wrestle at WrestleMania and this year it was the turn of famous YouTuber Logan Paul to compete at the Show of Shows.

Over the years, some of the biggest mainstream stars have been a part of WWE events. However, according to a former WWE Champion, the promotion missed out on having a popular singer Justin Bieber as part of a SummerSlam match involving John Cena.

In an interview last year, current AEW star Big Show recalled that WWE had plans to have singer Justin Bieber team up with him and John Cena at SummerSlam 2014.

Big Show said that all of them were on-board, including Bieber, but WWE nixed the plans for a strange reason.

Why did WWE didn’t go ahead with Bieber’s SummerSlam appearance?

The global fandom of WWE and its popularity makes it an appealing proposition to many celebrities. It also benefits the company as they get more eyeballs on their product by having a famous name make an appearance. Over the years, viewers have seen names such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Snoop Dogg, Bad Bunny and more turn out for WWE.

And according to Paul Wight aka the Big Show, WWE could’ve added Justin Bieber to that list in 2014.

On the ‘Talk is Jericho’ podcast in 2021, Big Show revealed that WWE was trying to have Justin Bieber be a part of SummerSlam in 2014. As per reports, the plan was for Bieber to team up with him and John Cena to take on the Wyatt Family.

Wight said, “It was going to be John Cena, the Big Show and Justin Bieber vs. The Wyatts at SummerSlam. Bieber was on board. He was excited, he was on board. He wanted to work out with John and I. This was a really, really big deal.”

However, the plans never came to fruition, and the match was nixed. Wight explained that while Bieber was a huge name, someone backstage though that the audience won’t relate to the singer.

Wight added, “One of the people making the decisions said, ‘I don’t see how Justin Bieber is going to relate to our audience.’”

However, his presence would have brought in a lot of attention to the promotion.

Indeed, WWE missed out on cashing in the chance to have a star like Justin Bieber on their premium event of the summer. Bieber enjoys a legion of fans worldwide and would’ve brought his fanfare to WWE. The fact that he was going to team up with John Cena would’ve only added to the star power of the match and helped WWE’s crossover appeal.
