Many wrestlers run the risk of severe injuries whenever they step out into the squared circle. But at times wrestlers like any of us run a health risk outside the ring well after their retirement. More recently WWE legend Billy Graham suffered a heart attack but has been able to recover since.
And now this unfortunate health hazard happened WWE Hall of Famer John Rodriguez. Nicknamed, The Unpredictable, he suffered from a peculiar condition that dropped his heart function down to 15% which is significantly less than the normal rate of at least 50%.
Dr. Rohit Shahani, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Staten Island University Hospital recalled his operation to save the wrestling legend.

John Rodriguez was unable to breathe during a family trip in 2021
The WWE legend faced many opponents in his glittering career, including the infamous Hulk Hogan. Johnny Rodz was healthy as a horse but felt the first signs of his heart condition back in 2021. During a family road trip in Ohio, the WWE Hall of Famer experienced suffocation making it difficult for him to breathe.
Rodriguez told in an interview with NBC New York “All of a sudden, I got this feeling about breathing that – wow – I could not breathe.”

This was the first time that he physically felt symptoms of silent ischemia. This condition restricts the normal flow of oxygenated blood to the heart. Furthermore, Rodriguez felt his stamina depleting at a rapid rate, a clear indication of a ‘silent heart attack’.
Moreover, his history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and being a smoker didn’t help the cause.
The doctors presented the WWE legend with the gift of life
Luckily, Rodriguez received special treatment at the Staten Island University Hospital, from Dr. Rohit Shahani. Rodriguez said “The guy [Dr. Shahani] beat the hell outta me, but I’m never gonna forget him because you know what? Not everybody can take a broken-down person who should have died already and bring him back to life.”
