Eric Rowan was one of the biggest victims of WWE getting cold feet after vigourously pursuing a storyline. The big man didn’t exactly set the world on fire after being seperated from the Wyatt Family.

While his partners Braun Strowman and Luke Harper could hold their own in the ring as well as on the mic, Rowan was always more suited for a bodyguard or a henchman role. That’s why, his second big stint in the WWE was as a disciple of the Planet’s Champion Daniel Bryan.

However, the red bearded monster tried his best to shed this image. After his break up with Bryan, Rowan got a new gimmick where he would bring a concealed cage to the ring. WWE played it up in a big manner, creating intrigue about the contents of the cage.

Rowan revealed in an interview with Sportskeeda that he was very enthusiastic about the build up and suggested various angles to the creative.

I had over the top ideas about it. One was this actress in American Horror Story, the smallest woman of all time. She was an American Horror Story freakshow. One idea was to build a slightly larger cage and when unveiled it would be this slightly smaller woman. Me and her would be friends and I would be protecting her from the atrocities of the outside world by locking her in the cage.”

Eric Rowan had no idea about the pay off by WWE creative

As was obvious, the pay-off was nowhere near the hype. The cage revealed a robotic spider which was destroyed by Drew McIntyre.

However, it wasn’t always that the cage was supposed to have a ridiculous spider.

“No no. Originally it was pitched that it would be a rodent or a rat and it was going to be killed by the babyface Champion to show that I had cared about something and that babyface turned heel, so that didn’t work. Well ok, then I asked them what is it now, then they just kept extending it, extending it and extending it.”

I’ll be very honest with you. Rowan’s idea could have created a controversy but it would’ve been unprecedented. It’s about time that people started treating WWE as a soap opera platform and let it show its characters as complex people rather than extreme shades of right snd wrong.

However, it seems that the company is happy treading in peaceful waters and is averse to risk. Personally, I feel that the storyline could’ve worked if the person in question had been comfortable playing the said character. What do you think about it?
