At the climax of the recent Royal Rumble 2024, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes engaged in a fierce battle as the only survivors of the thirty-man match. At the end of the day, The American Nightmare prevailed over Punk and conquered the Royal Rumble for the second consecutive year. He joins an esteemed list of elites consisting of Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, and Steve Austin with his milestone.

The Royal Rumble was Punk’s first televised match in the WWE after his return to the promotion. And like every year that he spent in the promotion, he had just one desire—the only dream he couldn’t achieve in his years of being a pro wrestler—and that dream was to headline WrestleMania. And with this elimination, the chances of it happening again this year have become almost nonexistent. So with another year of his dream being snatched away, can we witness a potential heel turn? And what other motivations could cause it? Let’s find out.

The desperation for a title shot and the intense stare-down with Cody Rhodes

It was an intense bout between the final two remaining in the men’s Royal Rumble. Both fighters exchanged blows and aerial maneuvers. Nevertheless, Rhodes escaped from a GTS and then threw him outside to win the ticket to WrestleMania. And as Rhodes celebrated, the Chicago-based star sat outside the ring, staring at ‘The American Nightmare’.

Rhodes noticed it too, and what followed was an intense stare-down between the two. In the previous edition of RAW, the two former AEW stars indulged in a fiery promo battle buildup. If the WWE chooses to capitalize on it, it could turn into one of the best feuds in modern wrestling. And with Punk being desperate for a main event, a title shot, and the current desire for revenge, it would make sense for him to turn heel against Rhodes.

When CM Punk made his grand return at Survivor Series, it was not just the crowd that lost their minds. Seth Rollins, too, lost his composure, though for very different reasons. It is a known fact by now that Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins and ‘The Cult of Personality’ do not like each other. In fact, when Rollins saw Punk return, he had to be stopped by security and Michael Cole, as he was all ready to have a brawl with the former AEW star.

With a rivalry this intense, it would make complete sense to finally let the two face each other. And since ‘The Architect’ is a face in the company and CM Punk is visibly frustrated, it would be perfect to have the 45-year-old go against the WWE again like the ‘Summer of Punk’ and build a feud towards WrestleMania or SummerSlam.

What do you think? Can we see Punk going heel again? Let us know in the comments.
