Brock Lesnar made his mark in the UFC within a short span of time. In just his third fight with the promotion, he won the Heavyweight Championship and looked unstoppable. However, in 2009, Lesnar was diagnosed with diverticulitis. After an immediate surgery, the illness returned two years later, keeping the former WWE Champion away from action. However, there was a silver lining for Lesnar in-between even in his health woes.

After his second surgery he had to again step back from the octagon and had the opportunity to be at his home with this family.

‘The Beast’ revealed how this difficult time allowed him to prioritize his family and brought him closer to them.

Brock Lesnar talked about spending time with his family during the hiatus

In 2011, Brock Lesnar served as a coach on UFC’s reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. UFC also planned a fight between him and Junior Dos Santos at UFC 131. But Lesnar had to withdraw from the fight, as he was suffering from diverticulitis, yet again.

After another surgery where doctors had to remove 12 inches of his colon, he faced time on the sidelines and a long recovery period. Shortly afterwards, Sports Illustrated asked the ‘Beast Incarnate,’ whether the time off has had a positive impact on his family life.

Lesnar replied that this time off allowed him to focus on his health and spend valuable time with his family, which he otherwise couldn’t while training all the time.

He said, “Absolutely. Just yesterday, for example, on a day when I’d normally be training, I had the whole day with my son.[…] So we spent the afternoon just sitting on the lawn mower, mowing the yard. If I had been in training camp, somebody would be doing that for me. But yesterday I told the lawn service not to show up this week. And me and my boy mowed the yard.[…]It was good.”

The former UFC Champion also said it was not difficult for him to take time away from work. He continued, “Not really. When I’m at home, I don’t think about my job very much. At least I try not to. My wife always says that my mind is wandering off, so I probably am thinking about work more than I want to. But not at this time. Right now I feel a sense of calmness over me.”
