After losing his debut match in UFC against Frank Mir, Lesnar came back to beat Heath Herring. He would then beat Randy Couture to win the Heavyweight Championship in just his third fight with the promotion. Couture once spoke about Lesnar’s time in the UFC and why he thinks he couldn’t fulfill his potential due to a particular reason.

Couture said Brock Lesnar shied away from fighting for this reason

It raised some eyebrows when Brock Lesnar received a title shot in UFC despite having a 1-1 record. However, given his name and appeal, it was a decision that made sense. At UFC 91, the former WWE Champion knocked out Randy Couture to win the Heavyweight title.

On The Kurt Angle Show, Couture talked about how he thinks a significant flaw prevented Lesnar from achieving further greatness.

He said, “I think he was on his way to be being very very dominant in that weight class. I don’t think he had made friends with getting punched in the face yet that’s my opinion and I think when he faced Velazquez and Aleister Overeem that became very apparent.”

Couture said getting hit in the face should’ve been a trigger for him to do better. “Hey you’re in a fight. You’re going to get punched in the face. That better trip your trigger and get you in the fight not get you to shy away from the fight. I just don’t think he had made friends with that yet. So although he’s a great big physical guy he had a ton of potential I don’t think he ever really achieved that.”

Perhaps we could never know how great Lesnar could’ve been in the UFC. His career in the octagon was cut short due to diverticulitis, an intestinal disease. He returned to WWE in 2012 and has remained with the company ever since. However, in 2016, he appeared for UFC to fight Mark Hunt but has stayed away from MMA since then.
