En route to his 16 world championships, WWE icon John Cena has seen both successes and failures up close. The 46-year-old knows what it takes to be a champion and isn’t shy to acknowledge when he sees one. Like recently, when Cena discovered the achievement of a specially-abled athlete, he instantly doffed his hat to this person. Interestingly, the athlete, a para swimmer, had indulged in a John Cena-esque behavior following his win.

Noticing the connection, the leader of Cenation couldn’t resist but step in to share his wisdom and make it special.

Inigo Llopis Sanz recently took the podium after finishing first in the S8 category of the 100-meter backstroke event at the ongoing World Swimming Championships in Manchester, United Kingdom. While the win was commendable, Sanz’s celebrations grabbed more eyeballs, as he did the famous ‘You Can’t See Me’ shuffle, a move that has been synonymous with the pro wrestling legend.

Sanz broke into the jig, placing his palm, with fingers stretched out, in front of his face and shuffling it. He also had the medal dangling from his hand during the celebratory move. As a video of Sanz went viral, it caught the $80 million wrestler-turned-actor’s notice.

He took to X, erstwhile Twitter, to not only laud the victory but also to share the secrets to success. “Passion and desire alone cannot guarantee success. It takes honesty, integrity, and most importantly work to succeed in anything,” Cena wrote.

“This young man has done all that and more to get where he is. Congratulations on the gold medal and for NEVER GIVING UP!,” he added. The last part about Never Giving Up is also Cena’s motto in the WWE.

Sanz had previously won the silver medal in the 100 m backstroke (S8) at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics Games. His recent haul will guarantee a place in the team heading for Paris, France, the host city of the 2024 games.

Coming back to Cena and his never giving up catchphrase, apart from keeping the wrestler motivated, it has also helped the WWE financially. The promotion has sold a ton of rally towels with ‘Never Give Up’ imprinted on them. But do you know what it stands for?

John Cena’s ‘Never Give Up’ explained in his own words:

Throughout his career, Cena has been a part of more than 2,200 matches. Some of them were also against formidable opponents, who brought his pain and humiliation, especially at the beginning of his career. Unwavering in his pursuit, the former WWE Champion has bounced back time and again.

But ‘Never Give Up’ also has another side. A South China Morning Post article from 2017 quoted Cena on the issue. “It’s not something that I try to force people to understand. Those three words are led by example and led by action,” he said.
