The last few days have been absolutely exhilarating for console fans all over the world. Microsoft made the first move by announcing the price and the launch date for the Xbox Series X and S. Now, Sony is all set to make some big announcements at the PlayStation Showcase on September 16.
While the price and launch date for the PS5 is still to be announced, its specifications are already known. The Xbox Series X is arguably the more powerful console and definitely boasts better GPU and CPU performance than the PS5. On the other hand, the PS5 houses a revolutionary SSD that will allow lighting fast load times and seamless switching between games. However, there is one other feature that Series X and S have that makes life easier for Xbox fans – the expandable storage.

The Xbox Series X and S both have an expandable storage option. The best part is that this is a proprietary option made available directly by Microsoft in collaboration with Seagate.
The official blog post said, “Built in partnership with Seagate, this 1 TB custom storage solution expands storage capacity of Xbox Series X with the full speed and performance of the Xbox Velocity Architecture Previous generation Xbox titles can still be played directly from external USB 3.2 hard drives.” This promises to make it easier for Xbox users to expand their console’s storage. The same cannot be said for PlayStation 5.

Xbox Series X and S have a more seamless expandable storage option than the PlayStation 5
The PS5 houses an 825 GB custom NVMe SSD that delivers unreal performance. It also has an expandable storage option, but there’s a catch. There is no first-party proprietary option announced by Sony for the same. There is an additional NVMe slot available for the users, but it’ll use third-party drives which will be much slower. Additionally, these third-party drives must fit into the PS5’s expansion slots.

According to VG24/7, Sony’s lead system architect, Mark Cerny said that Sony would reveal the PS5 compatible drives and their speeds later down the line. This definitely reassures the PlayStation fans a little, but there is absolutely no information regarding the availability of these drives. Also taking into account the Xbox Series S’ $299 price point, it gives an early edge to Microsoft. This is because fans can just by the cheaper console and expand their storage later.
