“You Don’t See Players Crying in a Grand Slam Semifinals”- Gerard Pique

World Number two, Novak Djokovic’s Serbia left Madrid with tear-filled eyes. Barcelona FC’s center-back Gerard Pique spoke about their despairing quarterfinal defeat at Davis Cup 2019 as the Serbians left Spain with melancholic emotions. 

In the deciding rubber, Serbians had a match point in the doubles match where Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki were playing against the Russians, Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev. The Serbians conceded a 6-4 4-6 7-6 (10-8) defeat to the Russians.

The entire Serbian team broke down in the post-match press conference and it was the most emotional moment during the course of the team-tournament in Madrid. Such scenarios are rarely seen in the sport of tennis.

“His loss was very cruel, having a match point against Russia. The most important thing is that players leave feeling that they want to back it up as soon as possible and adrenaline and passion that there is in no other tennis event. You do not see players crying in a Grand Slam semifinals,” Gerard Pique added.

Before the beginning of Davis Cup 2019, Barcelona FC’s defender Gerard Pique and tennis ace, Novak Djokovic carried out a conversation in private. Also, Novak thanked the Davis Cup investor, Pique for issuing a wildcard to Serbia to take part in Davis Cup.

“Novak was very involved at the beginning and we held meetings this week to see how we can improve,” Pique said. “When he learned about Serbia being given a wild card for 2020 he thanked me and he told me he wants to come back.”

The revamped format of Davis Cup which took place in Caja Magica earlier this month wasn’t a prosperous event. During the initial days of the tournament, the ticket sales suffered, not many people turned up for the matches and the regular sports television broadcasters did not air it which led to a difficulty for the tennis followers to catch up with the action in Madrid.
