In the list of promising young talents in tennis, the Canadian-born Denis Shapovalov has a high standing. He carries one of the strongest offensive games at hand, but he is yet to become a complete player. One of the tennis greats, Stefan Edberg, has some advice for the 21-year-old World No. 12.
Shapovalov rose to stardom when he defeated Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal in the 2017 Canadian Open. Specifically in his match against World No. 2, the Canadian showed the true value of his potential. Following that, with his growing power, Denis climbed up to number 10 in the ATP rankings.
Edberg agrees, “Definitely, I think he’s got all the skills, he’s got the strength, the quickness and I love to watch him play. He’s a very special guy to watch.”

“Learn other skills too”: Edberg’s advice to Denis Shapovalov
For young strong players like Denis, the challenge is to keep learning and keep growing. Stefan advised, “Even at the youngest age, you don’t want to complicate things too much, you need to be eager to learn other skills too; to be patient, and concentrate on what you are doing,”
“And, obviously need some defensive skills and making sure you come to the net at the right time, and be more careful how you play the points,” added Stefan Edberg.
Facing early-round exits in his last three tournaments, Denis will prepare for a strong comeback next season. Even though he’s got it all, he needs to utilize it to its maximum output. If Shapovalov does that, the tennis legend promises him a great outcome.

When talent and potential meet guidance, results follow. Denis definitely has a long career in tennis, and it would be hard to not see him among the best. However, Shapovalov will need to evaluate his game before the start of the next ATP Tour.
Concluding his point, Edberg said, “If you change this into his game and maybe into his mind, he would definitely be up there; and it will be very nice to see.”
