The mid-season tennis break gave players time to think about how they would plan the rest of the season. One player used this time to make a radical change. Alexander Zverev made the most of this break and welcomed David Ferrer into his coaching team. Zverev earlier said that Ferrer’s professionalism and goals are in line with his and he admires the Spaniard’s attitude. All things considered, Ferrer was the perfect match for him.

In a recent interview, Ferrer spoke about why he chose to join Zverev’s team. The two have a mutual respect for each other’s professionalism. Ferrer revealed that Zverev had called him three times to convince him to be his coach.

“He is a player that has always caught my attention. There were other proposals, but Zverev called me three times to ask if I could be his coach. The first two I told him I couldn’t, that I had other things in mind, but during the confinement, a third called me. I liked that, that he was the one who contacted me, he encouraged me to try,” Ferrer said.

“Alexander Zverev is a guy who works from 10:00 to 20:00 non-stop” – David Ferrer

“He is very professional, both physically and on the court. The weeks we were together he worked at a high level, always very receptive to everything I said to him. Personally, both he and the team convinced me, in the end, this is a job for many, but they let me work on everything I wanted without any kind of obstacle,” Ferrer added.

Ferrer also cited Zverev’s attitude as a reason for him agreeing to coach the German. Zverev practices for almost 10 hours a day, and it was this commitment that Ferrer saw as a new and exciting challenge.

“He is a guy who works from 10:00 to 20:00 non-stop, he is continually doing physical, tennis, physio. For me it is a very exciting challenge, as well as a very interesting experience because of knowing how they work, knowing a way of working that is not the Spanish one. I want to feed on these new notions to improve and grow in the future,” Ferrer mentioned.

Although Zverev lost at an early stage in the Western & Southern Open, he will work with Ferrer to improve his game in time for the US Open. It remains to be seen whether this partnership will bear fruits.
