Breaking: Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez Sues Longtime Promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions
All is not well between the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Alvarez has reportedly sued De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions along with DAZN over a breach of contract.
According to The Guardian, Alvarez had signed an eleven-bout, $365 million contract in 2018. According to the contract, Alvarez was supposed to get a $15 million purse for his fight with Rocky Fielding — the first of his contract — and $35 million for the following 10 bouts.
But just three fights into the contract, he’s gotten in conflict with promoter De La Hoya and streaming service DAZN over payment of his mandatory $35 million purse after each fight.

During an interview with The Athletic, Canelo said, “I’m the pound-for-pound No. 1 in the world. I’m not scared of any opponent in the ring, and I’m not going to let failures of my broadcaster or promoters keep me out of the ring. I filed the lawsuit so I can get back to boxing and give my fans the show they deserve.”
Canelo Alvarez’s recent exploits
Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) made his pro boxing debut in 2005. He has won titles in different weight classes from welterweight to light heavyweight and is one of the top pound-for-pound boxers on the planet.
However, he has fought only twice since 2019, with his last bout taking place in November against Russian WBO light heavyweight champion, Sergey Kovalev. He made his light heavyweight debut in the fight and won the bout via eleventh-round knockout, adding the WBO light heavyweight title to his collection.

Since the beginning of 2020, all of Canelo’s action has been outside the ring. He has filed for compensation of at least $280 million and has claimed it was a ‘breach of good faith.’
Alvarez has multiple options in front of him. He can fight the WBO super middleweight champion Billie Joe Saunders or the WBA and The Ring super middleweight champion Callum Smith in the future.
