It is no secret that the V6 turbo engines are widely disliked. Recently the FIA held a meeting in Paris with top manufacturers both from Formula One and outside it. The agenda was to discuss engine regulations beyond 2020. The consensus was to abandon the V6 engines for cheaper and louder engines. However, FIA President Jean Todt believed that V10 engines and V12 engines would not be welcomed by society. Attendees of the Paris meeting were Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda. Also attending the meeting was Stefano Domenicali, who was the former Ferrari team principal, for Lamborghini, who were representing the Volkswagen group. Harald Wester for Alfa Romeo was also present and he was representing the Fiat Chrysler group. Wolfgang Hatz, former Porsche Research and Development Chief was also present

But Red Bull driver Max Verstappen remains hopeful that V10 engines might make a return. “I think it would be very nice to have a V10 engine or something, with the lovely sound,” said Verstappen in an interview with Autosport. “[The current engines are] nice for me in the car, but I think it’s not really impressive for the fans, if you compare it to a V10 or V12.”

It has been 12 years since V10 engines were used in Formula One and Verstappen wishes to see it return, if it means enhancing the experience for the fans. When quizzed about the popularity of Formula E, the Dutchman was a little more skeptical. “Let’s keep things how they are for the next 15 years. I would be fine with that,” he said. “After that they can make the whole thing completely electric. After that I’m going to do other things, I already have some things in my mind I would like to do, but of course this is still quite far away. I hope that the sport is still using a petrol engine by then. One that also makes some sound.”
