The aspect of mental health got its due recognition and attention after the covid-19 pandemic. The prolonged lockdowns and bio bubbles for athletes were a major reason behind anxiety and other mental health-related issues. While the problem has always existed, people never used to talk about it. Former tennis star Chris Evert also went through the same but never came forward and talked about it.
However, she later realized her mistake and sought help. But initially, she was reluctant, as anyone else of her generation would be.

When Chris Evert was reluctant to seek help
Back in 2001, Chris Evert’s marriage with Andy Mill was not going great. The former world number one had problems in her married life which resulted in her getting an anxiety attack. At first, the doctors diagnosed it as a hypertension issue. However, with time and her friend’s guidance, Evert understood it was not hypertension but anxiety that was causing the problem.
However, the old-school thought resisted the tennis legend from seeking professional help. Here’s what she recalled thinking back in those days. “I’d go, ‘God, can’t you figure out your own problems?’ ” Evert said.

Evert had fallen for Mill’s best friend and retired Australian golfer Greg Norman. She later divorced Mill to marry Norman in 2008. However, this marriage also fell apart pretty quickly, within 15 months, to be exact.
Evert regrets letting her marriage fall apart
Chris Evert had an 18-year-long marriage with Andy Mill. The couple has three sons from the marriage. Although it’s understandable that every couple faces some sort of trouble in their marriage, the 67-year-old regrets not sorting it out on time. Ever said, in the same interview, that when her marriage was falling apart, she should have nailed it, which she mentions as one of her biggest regrets.

Further, the American stressed the importance of confronting the existing issues before it gets too late. Currently, Evert lives a single life while Mill is married. However, Evert still has a bond of friendship with Mill, as he was there for her when she was going through chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. The 18-time Grand Slam champion fully recovered earlier this year and has been involved in raising awareness about early detection of such deadly diseases in women.
