Touted as one of the biggest names in the lighter weight divisions of pro boxing, Gervonta Davis has been exceptional throughout his career as a pro. The 26-year-old Davis is on the top of the lightweight and light welterweight divisions of pro boxing. Davis is known as one of the most violent finishers in his weight classes, divisions filled with exceptional talent. Davis finishes fights, knocking out 23 of his 24 opponents till date.

Till date, ‘Tank’ has shown improved performances one after the other. Given his knockout ratio of over 95 percent, he owns probably one of the best highlight reels in pro boxing at the moment. The Baltimore native, who is likened to Mike Tyson for his aggressive style, will challenge for another title in an alien weight division in his next outing. He takes on WBA (regular) Junior Welterweight champion Mario Barrios in a highly anticipated bout tomorrow.

1- Gervonta Davis knocks out Jose Pedraza to claim the IBF super featherweight title

A 22-year-old Davis got his first shot at pro boxing gold when he took on IBF super featherweight titleholder Jose Pedraza in 2017. Davis, who was 17-0 at that time, took on the undefeated IBF champ in the co-main event of a card headlined by Badou Jack. In his first big showing, ‘Tank’ came out guns blazing, dominating the Puerto Rican round after round. Right from the start, Davis distributed his attack judiciously, landing heavy shots all over the champion at will. Slick movement coupled with brutal uppercuts wore on ‘The Sniper’ as the fight progressed. Mid way in the 7th, Davis landed a strong right to the body of Pedraza, which stun him bad. He picked his shots after and ended his opponent’s reign with a solid right hand.

2- Gervonta Davis floors Jesus Cuellar to win the vacant WBA Super Featherweight title

After being stripped off his IBF crown when he failed to make weight against Francisco Fonseca, ‘Tank’ shifted his focus on another divisional title. He clashed with veteran Jesus Cuellar for the vacant WBA Super Featherweight title in 2018. With strong counter uppercuts, to the head as well as to the body, chopped down the initial charge of the Argentine. Knocking the former champion multiple times, Gervonta Davis’s ability to deliver precise power punches at will was at display throughout the 3 rounds of the fight. ‘Jinete del KO‘ tried to enter his range and was continuously met with vicious strikes. Davis put down Cuellar with a barrage of punches late in the third and regained a championship in the Super Featherweight division.

3- Gervonta Davis vs Hugo Ruiz- One of ‘Tank’s’ most devastating finishes

Davis defended his title for the first time when he took on former champion Hugo Ruiz in 2019. Ruiz was coming off three straight wins in apparently what was the biggest fight of his life. In the opening round, it was the champion who pushed the action. Davis led the attack with his signature pressuring style. By the end of the round, Davis, who was in his element picking power shot after power shot, cornered Ruiz. He unloaded a quick jab, cross and hook combination to floor Ruiz. Ruiz commended Davis’s strength after the fight, saying that the weight was too much.

 

The right hand that Tank landed broke the Mexican fighter’s nose and he is yet to compete since.

4- Davis vs Nunez- Just another day in the office

Headlining his native Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena for the first time as a champion, July 2019 was Gervonta Davis’s time to shine. Coming off of a brilliant knockout of Hugo Ruiz, people wondered how ‘Tank’ would do in his subsequent defense of his WBA Super Featherweight title. Coming into the fight, his opponent Ricardo Nunez has questioned his durability. Davis replied in the ring.

He made reads on the Panama fighter in the first round. Davis picked the pace in the second, landing a big left while in range. He closed the show with a heavy barrage of combinations, to the joy of 12,000 Baltimore fans in attendance.

5-  Gervonta Davis’s stunning knockout of Yuriorkis Gamboa makes him a two division champion

Moving up a weight category in 2020, Gervonta Davis challenged Yuriorkis Gamboa for his WBA Lightweight title in December 2019. Davis, who was 22-0, made his first appearance in the 135 pound weight division. Davis pressured the Cuban smoothly throughout the fight. He was also successful in dropping the champion multiple times during the fight and was sailing on the judges’ scorecards. Yet the finish of this is truly a testament to the incredible aggressive game of Davis. He came out looking for the finish in the 12th, landing a big left right off the bat, which wobbled Gamboa. Patiently, he set up two more solid lefts that sealed the fate of the Cuban. Missing two big uppercuts, Davis landed the third and the referee waved the fight off.
