A Decade in Review: Serena Williams Finishes Way Ahead of Maria Sharapova in This Incredible Stat

Serena Williams is unarguably one of the greatest athletes of all time. Having turned professional in 1995, Williams is still the most dominant force in women’s tennis. During the last 25 years, Williams has overcome multiple injuries, embraced motherhood, and despite all challenges, won an astonishing 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most won by any player in the Open Era.
Recently, an interesting statistic made the rounds which revealed the best match-winning percentage in Grand Slams from the period of 2011-2020. The insight only included the top ten women’s players having the highest match-winning percentage in Grand Slams, with the sole criteria of having played a minimum of 50 matches.
The 2020 US Open champion, Naomi Osaka, grabbed the fifth spot with a 76.67% winning-percentage in major championships. Since the start of 2018, Osaka has won three Grand Slam titles and also clinched a World No.1 ranking for the first time in January last year.

Serena Williams claims the top spot
The American clinched the top spot with a whopping 88.27% winning percentage in Grand Slam matches over the last ten years. Since 2011, Williams has appeared in 17 major championships finals and continues to produce outstanding performances despite being in the twilight of her career.
Being one short of equaling Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles, Williams has lost in her last four Grand Slam finals appearances. Her arch-rival Maria Sharapova grabbed the second spot on the list, with a 78.86% winning percentage in Grand Slam matches. Sharapova reached her last Grand Slam final in 2015 but is the only Russian to hold a Career Grand Slam.

Li Na and Victoria Azarenka took the third and fourth spots, with 78.69% and 77.42% winning percentage in Grand Slam matches. Although Li retired in 2014, she became the first Asian to win a Grand Slam singles title.
