After Naomi Osaka’s Upset, Local Hero Kei Nishikori Continues To Unfurl Japan’s Flag at Tokyo Olympics 2020

Kei Nishikori took on American player Marcos Giron in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. It was their first meeting and the match was quite competitive. However, it was the Japanese star that prevailed in the end, winning the match 7-6(5) 3-6 6-1. 

Set 1: Kei Nishikori seals the deal

The American player began proceedings in the opening set. However, he was the first to be broken in the third game. He returned the favor back to Kei Nishikori and broke him in the sixth game.

After that, both players were serving with great efficiency. In the end, the outcome of the set had to be decided in a tiebreaker, which was a roller coaster ride. It was close right till the end and the Japanese star won the tiebreaker 7-5. After an hour into the match, Nishikori drew first blood, winning the set 7-6(5).

Set 2: Marcos Giron shocks the Japanese star

In the following set, Marcos Giron got the break in the first game. After that, he held serve and wasn’t giving his opponent a glimpse of any weakness. 

In the end, he won the set 6-3 in a little over 30 minutes. During the set, Nishikori played below his standards. He registered more forced and unforced errors than his opponent.

Set 3: The experience of the Japanese player comes in handy

The Japanese player broke his American opponent in the first game. He consolidated the break by holding serve to take a 2-0 lead. 

To make matters worse for the American player, he was broken for the second time in the set during the fifth game. Finally, Nishikori sealed the win by breaking Giron for the third time in the set, winning 6-1.

After this win, Kei Nishikori will face Bulgaria’s Ilya Ivashka. We wish both the players the very best for their upcoming matches.
