Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer. Sounds like an immediate ‘hands-on’ ticket fans would want, and, why wouldn’t they? ‘Two top hardcourt players’ testing their skills fits the purview of a blockbuster. However, Alexander ‘Sascha’ Zverev disabled that dream meet once at the ATP Finals and stunned everyone with the result. It’s only natural that he can’t forget what he achieved that season. But, what exactly did Zverev do?

The German sensation enjoyed a splendid run this season. He lifted the Italian Open crown and finished runner-up at the French Open against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. His performance on the Grand Slam stage invited no concerns and, icing on the cake, he won the season-ending Paris Masters. Unfortunately, he couldn’t move past the semifinals at the ATP Finals as he lost the rubber to finalist Taylor Fritz. However, his 2018 season ended on a far different note than this year’s.

Just when everyone hoped to see ‘Swiss Maestro’ Federer lock horns with 24-time Major winner Djokovic for the ATP Finals title in London, Sascha stepped in and finessed the GOATs. Zverev moved past Federer in the last four without dropping a set, and, surprisingly, echoed similar results against Nole in the summit clash.  Though he reinstated his triumph at the season-commencing event once again in 2021, a distinct feeling stood out in his 2018 victory.

Knowing that he had thrashed two of the fiercest rivals in the sport, Zverev sat with ‘Head Tennis’ to describe how he felt about that triumph. “Everyone was hoping for a Federer-Djokovic final. Beating Federer in the semifinals and then beating Novak in the finals, arguably the two best hardcourt players playing the ATP Finals is extremely special, but winning them is something that cannot describe in words.”

German superstar Alexander Zverev returned to his ‘family environment’ in May 2023 as he reinstated his father as primary coach and parted ways with Sergi Bruguera a year after their partnership started. With an impressive winning streak this year, Sascha is looking to add more firepower to his coaching roster. Seeing the German’s good relationship with Boris Becker, Zverev is open to getting coached by his countryman.

However, Becker’s uncertainty about travel might pose a challenge to this potential partnership. Highlighting the same, Zvevev cited: “I love Boris and I also believe that he has an incredible knowledge of tennis. “But I don’t know how he feels about traveling. That’s the only question mark for him. As soon as he has solved and clarified that, we can talk about it. We are always in contact with him and often talk to each other. Now for Australia, it will stay as it is and then I will see.”
