For Germany’s finest tennis player, Alexander Zverev, a third Grand Slam event this year may be too soon. Most likely, the current world no.2 and the US Open 2020 finalist, Zverev, won’t be a part of the upcoming US Open.

The 2022 season hasn’t gone well for Alexander Zverev. The German star has consistently performed well throughout this season, but he is yet to claim a title. In Montpellier and Madrid, he made it to the finals, but lost on both occasions.

Alexander Zverev withdraws from the US Open after the French Open fiasco

Alexander Zverev won’t be competing at the US Open this year. He still hasn’t recovered after suffering a horrific leg injury in the French Open semifinals. According to the interview, the Olympic gold medalist will not play in the final Grand Slam of the season because he is not entirely fit. On August 29, the US Open will get underway in New York. 

In the French Open semifinals against eventual champion Rafael Nadal, Zverev injured his right ankle and tore all three of his lateral ligaments. After having surgery, the German star immediately started his recovery.

Despite the recovery procedure for Zverev going as planned, the US Open is still a little early for him.

When will Zverev make his comeback?

The 25-year-old had surgery earlier this year to mend ruptured ligaments in his right ankle. These injuries typically require time-consuming rehabilitation procedures. Zverev recently stated that it was too early to make a comeback.

He does, however, want to be fully fit and firing for the Davis Cup in September. In Davis Cup Group C, Germany is grouped with France, Belgium, and Australia. The Davis Cup mid-rounds will begin in Hamburg from September 13 to 18.

Zverev’s finest grand slam performance to date occurred at the 2020 US Open, where he lost to Dominic Thiem in the final in five sets. While he has yet to secure his first major title, he did win gold at the 2020 Olympics after defeating Novak Djokovic on the way to the championship match. Despite his lengthy layoff, Zverev reached a career-high of No. 2 in the ATP rankings this year.
