‘Cannot Talk About Everything’: Daniil Medvedev on the Crowd Boos for Mentioning Novak Djokovic at Australian Open 2022

Daniil Medvedev is the man of the moment in tennis currently. The Russian played the match of the tournament at the Australian Open yesterday. He scripted an amazing comeback to enter the semifinals of the Grand Slam Down Under. Moreover, many hailed his fighting spirit.

He overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime in a five-setter thriller at the Rod Laver Arena. Further, the 25-year-old will overtake Novak Djokovic in the ATP rankings. He will become World Number 1 when the new rankings will be released after the Australian Open.

The Russian was all smiles post his quarterfinals win yesterday. However, in one of the replies during the on-court interview, the defending US Open champion mentioned the name of Novak Djokovic. This drew a sharp response from the crowd.

What did Daniil Medvedev say?

The Russian was asked what went through his mind at two sets to love and what tactical changes, if any, did he feel like he needed to make. In one of his responses, the 25-year-old said, “I don’t know if people are going to like it but I told myself what Novak would do?” The Rod Laver Arena echoed with boos following his response.

Reacting to the response from the crowd during the post-match press conference, the Russian said, “As a person, I’m trying to be honest of course. Sometimes I cannot talk about everything, because we live in the time where you cannot say anything, everything you think. But this, I mean, their reaction, I try to be honest with them, to tell them how I felt during the match. Yeah, I like honesty.”

Medvedev continued the winning momentum with his quarterfinals victory. Moreover, the Russian held his nerves at crucial junctures to seal the match in five sets. He will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals.
