Roger Federer made an impressive comeback at the French Open 2021. Playing against Denis Istomin in the very first round, Federer completely dominated the match and gave no chance to his opponent to bounce back. As a result, he thrashed Istomin in straight sets with the final scoreline of 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.

With the win, Federer extended his hegemony over Denis Istomin on the ATP Tour. He now leads the head-to-head battle 8-0 against him.

In the post-match interview, the Swiss maestro talked about how he spent the past 4-5 months. He was surely in immense pain before arriving in Paris. The former World No.1 even disclosed that he was on crutches and one can imagine how difficult it must have been for the 39-year-old to make a comeback from that situation.

“When you have 4 children, you’re always busy. I also had 5 weeks with crutches. It was nice to spend a little time at home but it was weird not to be able to see the friends. And then I worked a lot,” said Federer in the interview.

Federer also admitted that he felt really nice during his break as he got some quality time to spend with his family. Even though he mentioned that he missed his friends, he highlighted that he worked really hard during the break so that he can play again.

“Confidence always wins”-Roger Federer

Federer emphasized the importance of confidence that he has earned after winning the match. He believes that it is the thing that makes things clearer and because of it, a player never doubts himself.

“Confidence always wins…It gives you clarity, you don’t doubt yourself, you feel like it’s gonna go your way in the most important moments,” added the 20-time Grand Slam winner.

Interestingly, this was Roger’s first win at a major after 487 days. He last won a Grand Slam match in the quarters of the Australian Open 2020.

After this, Federer will advance to the second round of the French Open 2021. It’ll most probably be against Marin Cilic and he’ll like to carry forward his momentum after his recent triumph. Will he be able to beat the odds and succeed in Paris this year?
