Defending Champion Novak Djokovic Skips Mutua Madrid Open, Prioritizes Hometown Event Ahead of the French Open 2021

World number one Novak Djokovic, who recently lost in the semi-finals of the Serbia Open, has decided to skip the upcoming Madrid Masters to play at the second ATP 250 event at Belgrade. This event takes place a week before the French Open.
The tournament at Belgrade is scheduled to take place from May 22nd to 29th. The 18-time Grand Slam champion has always mentioned that Majors are his priority, as he intends to perform well in all four of them.

Novak Djokovic might play the second clay-court event in Belgrade, Serbia

With the Serbia Open being a successful event, the Serb might have opted to stay in Serbia instead of traveling to Spain or Rome to avoid the bubble life. The entry list to the Belgrade 2 event has top-quality players like Gael Monfils, Adrian Mannarino, Filip Krajinovic among others.

Djokovic joins Roger Federer in the list of players to skip the Mutua Madrid Open that is scheduled to take place from May 2. The Serb will keep 500 out of the 1000 points he earned by winning the title in 2019. The tournament got canceled last year owing to the covid-19 pandemic.

After winning the Australian Open this year, the Serb made his entry at the Monte-Carlo Masters and surprisingly got beaten by Dan Evans in the third round. Even in his first tournament, Djokovic lost to the Russian Aslan Karatsev in three brutal sets.
The Russian, who is on a roll this year, registered the biggest win of his career by defeating the Serb. However, Karatsev lost to Matteo Berrettini in the final.

The world number one is yet to win a title on the red-turf this year, but he is making plans by taking the bubble life into consideration at several tournaments. While the Serb is yet to take a call on the second Belgrade event, it will be interesting to see how he plans the remainder of the season.
