‘Detailed, Grisly, Sick’ – Andre Agassi on How He Approached the FBI Over a Gruesome Incident Involving Ex-Wife Brooke Shields in 1996

Andre Agassi was an American heartthrob during his heyday on the ATP Tour. Apart from his glorious tennis career, he was immensely famous. And so was his then-girlfriend, Brooke Shields. When the two got together, it became a huge topic for people around the world. Although they received well wishes and love from their enormous fan base, there were also some unsavory reactions. They both received threatening letters and things got pretty scary for the player and his girlfriend.

Agassi detailed the horrid experience in his autobiography and how his then-fitness trainer, Gil Reyes, did not let it go easily and worked for the safety of the two.

Brooke Shields started receiving threats while dating Andre Agassi

Andre Agassi was an American sporting icon, and people rightly adored him. As with any famous personalities, there were also people who weren’t keen on celebrating or appreciating the American tennis star. This became apparent when he started dating the Hollywood sensation, Brooke Shields. The actress received threats and sometimes Agassi was also a victim of such threats.

In his book, ‘Open’, he talked about the experience and stated, “As 1996 wears on, safety seems like an especially precious commodity.” He wrote about how things were getting worse. He said, “Brooke is regularly receiving letters from stalkers, threatening her—and sometimes me—with death and unspeakable horrors. The letters are detailed, grisly, sick.”

Agassi took action by forwarding the details to the FBI and even asked her fitness trainer, Gil Reyes, to work with them to know the progress. However, Reyes was not joking around when it came to Agassi’s safety. The American player stated, “Several times, when a letter is traceable, Gil goes rogue. He boards a plane and pays the stalker a visit.” He would go to their places and would show them their letters.

Agassi stated what Reyes used to say, “I know who you are and where you live. Now take a good look at me, because if you ever bother Brooke and Andre again, you will see me again, and you don’t want that, because then it will be on.”

How did things go between Shields and Agassi?

The couple ended up getting married in 1997. However, things did not go as planned and they eventually filed for divorce in 1999. This was a huge setback, but both of them eventually found their footing in their personal lives. The eight-time Grand Slam champion started dating the German tennis star, Steffi Graf. They both got married in 2001 and now lead a happy.

Moreover, Agassi also coached Novak Djokovic for a year, but things did not align with their vision. However, they both have immense respect for each other even after parting ways. While Brooke Shields found her soulmate in the American screenwriter and producer, Chris Henchy.
