‘Electric’ Ben Shelton Bites the Dust as Sebastian Korda Outdoes Andy Roddick to Make America Proud at the Shanghai Masters

It has been an exciting year for American tennis. Following the retirement of Serena Williams last year, the responsibility fell on young stars to carry the country’s hopes in the sport. The likes of Coco Gauff, Ben Shelton, and Taylor Fritz have not disappointed as they have produced wonderful performances tournament after tournament. Recently, the Shanghai Masters quarterfinal saw an enticing, all-American quarterfinal between Sebastian Korda and Shelton. In a nail-biting match, the former eventually prevailed. As a result, he moved past Andy Roddick in an amazing feat.

In a match that lasted for nearly three hours, Korda got the better of his compatriot in three sets 6-7 (10), 6-2, 7-6 (6). Following the big win, he spoke highly about Shelton.

With his monumental effort against compatriot Ben Shelton, Korda became the first American to reach the semi-final of the Shanghai Masters. He surpassed the likes of Andy Roddick and Jack Sock, who managed quarterfinal finishes. Further, during the post-match interview, he had special words for Shelton.

Talking about Shelton, he said, “I played an incredible match. Ben did as well. It was really high level. We had a lot of great points out there.”

“Hopefully it’s the first of many many battles we play against each other. He’s such an electric tennis player. It’s a lot of fun to share the court with him.”

Despite intriguing rivalry on the court, the two enjoy great respect among each other. Their match today was a shining example, as it had everything – from gripping action to the two showing mutual respect for each other. Moreover, it is not the first time Korda has spoken highly about Shelton.

When Korda praised Shelton’s US Open heroics

During last month’s US Open, Shelton made it to the semifinals of the tournament before losing out to Novak Djokovic. Lauding him for his efforts, Korda said, “I think Ben did a great job at the US Open. He just really showed the world what he’s capable of and what he can do in the near future. I think he’s a great role model for younger kids with the way that he plays.”

Meanwhile, Korda will be aiming to capture the biggest title of his career in Shanghai. He has entered the semifinals and will face Hubert Hurkacz in the last four clash.
