Daniil Medvedev’s loss at the Australian Open 2022 must have been hard for him to take. The Russian won the first two sets and had a breakpoint at 3-2 in the third set. Almost everyone had been expecting him to win his second Grand Slam title, but Rafael Nadal had other plans.
He turned the momentum around, from being two sets down, and in a tremendous display of grit and never-say-die attitude, overpowered the Russian.

Medvedev naturally seemed subdued in the post-match press conference after the 5 hours 24 minutes epic battle. He recounted a story about himself as a kid who dreamt of achieving big things in the sport. At the end of the monologue, he said “I am not going to explain why. The kid has stopped dreaming. From here on, I will just play for myself & to provide for my family.”

Daniil Medvedev also spoke about the political instability plaguing the world and talked about how every kid deserved to dream big. “They all have dreams, their life is just starting, so many nice experiences to come: first friends, first great emotions. Everything they feel and see is for the first time in their lives. That’s why I want to ask for peace in the world, for peace between countries,” he said.
He himself seems to be back on track with regards to the tour, reaching the semi-finals at Acapulco, and taking away the World No. 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic. This is historic because this is the first time since 2004 that anyone apart from the Big Four has topped the ranking list. In the semifinals at Acapulco, he lost to Rafael Nadal in straight sets.
