World No.8 Matteo Berrettini registered his best Grand Slam performance at the Wimbledon Championships 2021 as he reached the finals of the tournament. Even though World No.1 Novak Djokovic defeated him in four sets to clinch the title, the Italian was able to win a few hearts.
After the Wimbledon Championships 2021, Berrettini was supposed to play at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He was to play doubles with Fabio Fognini there but withdrew from the tournament because of an injury. This has upset Fognini according to multiple reports, as he allegedly never got a call from Matteo and instead found out about the development from a news report. Before Matteo’s withdrawal, Jannik SInner too had withdrawn from the Games.
In a recent interview, Fognini seemed quite unhappy with his compatriots’ decision, also revealing that the Olympic Games is one event he will never skip.

“Sinner also made a choice that I do not agree with. But for this shirt, I quartered myself,” said Fognini in the interview.
He also stated that because of Berrettini, he will not be able to play in the doubles category at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, especially since he never got a call.
“I would rather not comment on that. I cannot play doubles because of his withdrawal and I am still waiting for his call,” added the Italian player.
