‘Good Things Will Happen’- Grigor Dimitrov Says He’s Put in a Lot of Work This Season

Grigor Dimitrov is in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000. The Bulgarian beat 11th seed, Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals to reach the last 4. However, the victory didn’t come that easy. World No. 29 had to elevate his game to get the better of the in-form Hurkacz in a three-set thriller that lasted for 2 hours and 27 minutes on Court Rainier III in Monaco.

Following his victory, the 30-year-old opened up about his preparations, coming into the Monte Carlo Masters.

Grigor Dimitrov on how he managed to outplay Hurkacz

Dimitrov started the match on a strong note, winning the opening set 6-4. However, Hurkacz made a solid comeback, clinching the second set 6-3. In the deciding set, Dimitrov and Hurkacz put on a display of breathtaking tennis to push the set into a deciding tiebreak. Eventually, Dimitrov prevailed in the tiebreak to seal the semifinal spot in Monaco. Dimitrov edged past Hurkacz 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2).

Following his epic quarterfinal clash, Dimitrov opened up about the marathon match. The 30-year-old credited his hard work and work ethic for his victory over Hurkacz. He said, “I knew if I put the right amount of work and I kept on following a little bit of what I had to do, good things will happen.”

Dimitrov further added, “I also felt that I kind of started the clay court season a little bit later than everybody else. I took some more time off after Miami, and, yeah, I was just focusing on other parts I think of the game. Here am I.”

Dimitrov’s run at the Monte Carlo Masters

Being an unseeded player, Dimitrov started his campaign at the Monte Carlo Masters with a first-round win over Nikoloz Basilashvili, who retired mid-match. He next faced Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in the second round. Dimitrov recorded a come-from-behind win over the Serb.

In his Round-of-16 clash, Dimitrov stunned the fourth seed, Casper Ruud in straight sets.  After edging past Hurkacz, Dimitrov will now face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the semifinal on Saturday. The young Spaniard has been on a dream run in Monaco. En route to the semifinals, he has shocked Novak Djokovic in his Round of 32 clash and subsequently beat David Goffin and Taylor Fritz to reach the last four in Principality.
