No one from the big three in top two after 18 years

Since the arrival of the big three, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, the competition for the pinnacle of the rankings has always been amongst the ‘Big Three’. Notably, for the past 18 years, either one of the three have always remained in the top two of the rankings.

While Djokovic and Nadal are still in the top five, Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer has dropped to 66th rank as he has been away from the action for close to a year.

The year 2022 has been full of challenges for the former world number 1. It started on a controversial note as the Serb left Australia because of his stand against the Covid-19 vaccine. After losing the chance to defend his Australian Open title, the 35-year-old missed a major chunk of the season as he could not enter the United States for similar reasons.

While the world number 3 made a late entry to the clay-court season, he crashed out of the Monte Carlo Open after losing his very first match against unseeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Later, he lost the final of the Serbian Open against Andrey Rublev. However, he did well in the Madrid Open and the French Open, where he lost in the semifinal and quarterfinal, respectively.
