‘It Must Be an Amazing Feeling’ – Daniil Medvedev Reacts After ‘Getting Destroyed’ by World No.205

Daniil Medvedev might be one of the best players in the world right now. However, the Russian is still vying to win a title this year. Yesterday, Medvedev suffered yet another setback after losing to Tim van Rijthoven in the finals of the ATP 250 event, the Libema Open.
While the then World No. 2 had a disappointing end to his ‘S-Hertogenbosch campaign, he made sure to congratulate Tim on his achievement.

Daniil Medvedev praises Tim for his campaign
Due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis, Russian & Belarusian players have been banned from playing at this year’s Wimbledon Championship. While Medvedev has accepted the decision, he has made sure to not let the decision hamper his participation in other grass court tournaments.

Having a not so pleasant run on the clay courts, Medvedev kicked off his grass court campaign in ‘S-Hertogenbosch. Reaching the finals, he suffered a loss to Tim van Rijthoven. During the trophy ceremony, impressed by Tim’s performance, Medvedev also took a hilarious dig on himself, leaving everyone in a split.
Congratulating Tim, Medvedev said, “…congrats Tim. Amazing week. I mean first time in an ATP tournament and straight away you destroy the No. 2 in the world in straight sets in the finals. So, I think it must be an amazing feeling. I don’t know how it feels. So, it must be a good feeling.”

Tim van Rijthoven sails to his first ATP title
As mentioned by Medvedev, Tim van Rijthoven had an amazing week. Playing just his second main draw ATP tournament since turning pro in 2015, Rijthoven kicked off his ‘S-Hertogenbosch campaign with a win over Australia’s Matthew Ebden. Going ahead, he further outplayed the 2022 Indian Wells champion, Taylor Fritz.

Being in devastating form, he booked his spot in the semifinals with a quarterfinal win over Frenchman Hugo Gaston. In the semifinals, he got his first ever Top 10 win, outplaying the young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in a three-set thriller. Going into the final as the underdog against the current World No.1 Daniil Medvedev in the finals, he outclassed the Russian to the lift the trophy, to the surprise of the audience.
