Jannik Sinner shut down critics with his stellar showdowns this season, ultimately capping the year with a second consecutive Davis Cup triumph in Malaga. With the emergence of Sinner and his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz on the big stage, fans have been comparing the World No. 1’s prowess with the Spaniard. However, an ex-pro has thrashed such contrasts.
Both players have treading on more or less equal footing this season. While on one hand, Sinner faced backlash due to his doping allegations which are yet to reveal a final verdict, Alcaraz had to endure multiple bouts of a sharp drop in form. The Spaniard added the French Open title to his resume and later, defended his title at Wimbledon. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Sinner won his maiden Slam in Melbourne, and as he enhanced his performances, the US Open title never seemed out of reach. Alcaraz was, however, far from his best in New York.
Following his gold medal match loss to the Serbian Novak Djokovic at the Olympics, Alcaraz’s consistency went off the grid. When frustrations boiled to the summit, the Spaniard shattered his rackets to bits at the New York Slam, sending shockwaves across the community. However, Sinner, even under the most testing circumstances, did not crack like Alcaraz. His resilience and a calm yet feisty on-court demeanor separate him from the rest, as per Italian legend Giovanni Pelazzo.

When everyone said a lot about him because he didn’t play in Davis, I defended him with a knife between my teeth. Leave him alone, let him train with serenity and the results will come: Sinner has something special. Mental strength, work culture, the sense of duty and sacrifice, the obsession to improve. In this, yes, it is very un-Italian. This professionalism of his made the difference.” (Translated from Italian)

“Jannik è un ragazzo simpaticissimo, ma a lui di stare davanti a un microfono o a una telecamera non gliene può fregar di meno. Anche in questo è poco italiano. Certi suoi colleghi farebbero a gara per partecipare a certe trasmissioni, a lui ce lo devi portare con la… pic.twitter.com/SW18vFdiSb
