‘Made the Train in Time’- South African Sporting Legend Issued a Clarification to the ‘Original’ Roger Federer Owing to a Mistake at Zurich in 2021

Roger Federer represented Switzerland for the entirety of his tennis career. However, the Swiss maestro also holds South African citizenship. This is due to Federer’s South African roots. Federer’s mother, Lynette, is originally from the South African city of Kempton Park in the Gauteng province.
Over the years, Federer’s roots have allowed him to form a deep and lasting bond with Siya Kolisi, the iconic South African rugby player. The two happen to be the closest of friends and in 2021, a funny incident occurred when the two met in Switzerland.
What happened in 2021 during Roger Federer and Siya Kolisi’s Switzerland rendezvous?

In October 2021, ‘The Federer Express’ was launched in Basel. The tram honored the legend, who was actively involved in bringing the project to life. A few days following the launch of the tram, Siya Kolisi made his way to the Swiss city of Geneva. His friend found out about it and wasted no time in inviting him to Zurich for lunch.
Federer shared an all-smiles photograph of himself with Siya Kolisi and his parents, Robert and Lynette Federer. He captioned the post, “Anyone need a tourist guide? I found a Springbok🇿🇦 roaming the streets of Zurich 🦌🇨🇭@siyakolisi.What a pleasure to see you Siya 🙌🏼“

Kolisi left a comment on the post later and referred to Robert Federer as the “Original RF”. The South African rugby sensation wrote, “thank you so much for today. Lol please tell the Original RF I made the train in time. See you soon”. The Instagram interaction between Federer and Kolisi was a reflection of the great relationship they share.

Federer and Kolisi’s meeting on the tennis court
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal faced each other in an exhibition match in Cape Town, South Africa, back in 2020. Federer got the better of Nadal with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win. The exhibition match, which was a charity event organized by the Roger Federer Foundation, proved to be the first meeting between Federer and Kolisi.

On that day, Kolisi was a guest of honor and made a rare appearance on the tennis court. He gifted Federer a Springbok jersey. Kolisi, Federer, and Nadal also took a selfie. Since then, Kolisi and Federer have kept in touch and have become fast friends.
