‘Many Days in My Bed Crying’ – Matteo Berrettini Delves Deep Into His Disturbing Injury Plagued Phase After Outclassing Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon

The French Open 2023 has been an amazing season for Alexander Zverev. He reached the semi-finals beating top players like Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov. Though he lost to Casper Ruud, he displayed excellent skills and looked promising. Cut to the grass season, and Zverev struggled to reach the third round and lost to Matteo Berrettini, who had a terrible start this year. But this year’s Wimbledon Championships has been an impeccable run for him, given the least amount of exposure he got in the lead up to the tournament.

The Italian has played back-to-back matches because of a hectic Wimbledon schedule, and his reaction was energetically emotional.

The ATP’s thirty-eighth seed talked about playing five matches in a row after months of inactivity. The Italian has missed the majority of the matches this season because of injuries. After winning the match against Zverev, Berrettini was asked how it felt to play tirelessly on the grass, a surface that is always uncertain and in weather that is exhausting.

The Italian revealed that after spending so much time in illness, wailing about not being able to play, this game streak is exactly what he needed. Berrettini said, “I spent many days in my bed crying about not being able to play. 5 days in a row is nothing. It’s sad but it’s true. I missed playing & competing. People that are close to me know…”

Talking about the energy he has right now, the twenty-seven-year-old said, “I was like, I have to come back and feeling alive when I play. That’s the energy I have right now. Doesn’t matter how tired I am. In the morning, go there, enjoy. I find that extra energy that maybe few years ago I gave for granted.”

He also recalled his horrible time dealing with injury and revealed how he feels about playing the top seed in his next match.

Just when he thought he was not ready, the Italian aced the game

Before entering the tournament, Berrettini thought he was not ready. But he did not want to give up without trying. This attitude got him back to his best. The former sixth seed said, “…Like I said on court, if they told me few weeks ago you’re going to play five days in a row in Wimbledon, I would have signed with my blood.”

That is how desperate he was to get back to the form, and what better than a Grand Slam to prove his mettle?! Berrettini will play Carlos Alcaraz in his next game tomorrow. The winner of this game reaches the quarter-finals. The Italian said that he was glad to be in a place where he was once watching Alcaraz on TV in Roland Garros to having his next match scheduled against him.

With the amount of adrenaline Berrettini has right now, he is happy to play against the World No. 1. He agreed that it is going to be a challenge to play against Alcaraz, but he is happy to play against the best. Who do you think will win the match tomorrow?
