Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic recently won his 21st Grand Slam title. He successfully defended the Wimbledon title for the third consecutive time. However, the year hasn’t been great for the Serb. Earlier he was unable to participate in the Australian Open because of his stand against covid-19 vaccination.
After getting his momentum back in Wimbledon, the 21-time Grand Slam champion could have used it to do well in the US Open as well. However, as per the US government guidelines, he won’t feature in the Flushing Meadows.

Many notable people from the country are writing petitions to allow the Serb to participate in the tournament. However, the US Open defending champion, Daniil Medvedev, believes it won’t be the right choice to bend the rules for an individual.
Daniil Medvedev on Djokovic’s vaccination controversy
World number one Daniil Medvedev believes that it won’t give the right message to allow an unvaccinated Djokovic to enter the tournament. “If we change the rules, there will be those who will rebel. Because they are banned from entering the country, so they cannot work,” he said.
He further added, “I don’t want to talk about the reasons for these decisions, because many people died during the pandemic,”

Daniil Medvedev defeated Djokovic in the US Open 2021 final to win the title. Later, he also made it to the final of the Australian Open, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. The Russian had to sit out of the Wimbledon championships 2022 as the hosts didn’t allow Russian and Belarusian players to feature in the tournament.
Novak Djokovic withdraws from Canadian Open
Djokovic was scheduled to play in the Canadian Open to prepare for the upcoming US Open. However, the 35-year-old has pulled out of the tournament.

He took this step as Canada does not allow unvaccinated travelers in the country. The Serb will now prepare to participate in the US Open 2022, in case he can get approval to play in the tournament.
