‘Work-life balance’ is a concept that no matter what one’s field of profession, takes time to perfect. Grigor Dimitrov, playing in the top echelon of the ATP, is among those who have gone through a tough journey to the top, from spending most of their time on the court to figuring out the importance of balancing the two aspects of their lives.

The Bulgarian player’s quote on finding that equilibrium from his latest interview with a French outlet is making the rounds on social media. It comes ahead of his crucial Miami Open final where Dimitrov is seen reiterating the need to ‘simplify things’ while hoping to clinch the ATP 1000 title.

One of Dimitrov’s fans took to X (previously Twitter) quoting him, “My life and my tennis have sometimes gotten tangled up. It took me a while to realize that I needed to simplify things. You have fifteen tools in your bag, you can make fifteen different decisions, so you can quickly t ‘to confuse.” (translated using Google Translate)

Known for his on-court elegance, Dimitrov has admittedly struggled with finding a balance between professional and personal life. In a recent interview with Tennis Channel, the Bulgarian says he is playing the best tennis of his life and gives credit to his newfound ‘balance’ for it.

“There were times when I thought I could have and do everything. Over time I have understood what my strengths are, both on and off the court. I have learned to find the balance to manage all the moments. The most important thing is to live in the present: you have to be 100% in all moments,” says Dimitrov.

Catching up with the Baseline last year in May before his Rome campaign, the Bulgarian talked about attaining zen and the importance of taking timeouts.

Talking about his music rituals before matches to calm his nerves, Dimitrov goes on to talk about the importance of self-care, “It means everything. I think it’s important to take as many timeouts as you need.” He further adds, “Your body tells you and navigates you in the right way, so you need to listen to it. You know, massage, spa, saunas, cryotherapy, and different types of meditation.”

Dimitrov has previously also talked about his strenuous training hours and not knowing how to relax which led to fatigue and a declining performance on the court. In the interview with Baseline, Dimitrov goes on to talk about his vacations with his family.

“However, for me, I also always do one holiday at the end of the year with my family. It’s one where we always just go, me and them, somewhere very nice and different.”

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Dimitrov’s advocacy would be learning to enjoy both worlds. Giving importance to family and friends to perform better in your professional endeavors and not burn out.
