Wherever the Serbian tennis legend, Novak Djokovic goes, a number of controversies somehow often follow him. However, now that he is in Melbourne, it was his father who landed him in trouble after his quarterfinal match against the Russian star, Andrey Rublev. A group of fans were thrown out of the stadium as they were allegedly holding a Russian flag with Vladimir Putin’s photo on it.

But that’s not it; Djokovic’s father Srđjan was later spotted with a group of Russian supporters outside the stadium and was posing for a photo with a man supporting Vladimir Putin. Consequently, the incident created a lot of controversies surrounding both Djokovic and his father. Now, Srđjan has released a statement, defending himself and his family.

The 62-year-old was reportedly seen posing with a fan wearing a t-shirt with a Z symbol printed on it. As that emblem stands in solidarity with Russia during its conflict with Ukraine, it became a major talking point for many. It was also revealed that Djokovic’s father posed with fans who were Vladimir Putin supporters.

Srđjan was reported heard telling them “long live the Russians” as he left. Consequently, the Djokovic family became a target of heavy criticism and backlash from a slew of fans. In his defense, Srđjan has recently released a statement saying that he “had no intention” of causing any sort of disruption ⁦and chaos.

A journalist, Natalie Forrest, shared Srđjan’s statement on her Twitter account that also said that he was just outside with Novak’s fans to celebrate his quarterfinal victory. Djokovic’s father further clarified that he had no intention of being caught up in such a controversy as he posed for a photo with them.

Talking about his own experiences, Srđjan said, “My family has lived through the horror of war, and we wish only for peace.”

In his statement, the father of the 21-time Grand Slam champion has also revealed that he will not be there in the stadium during his son’s semifinal match against the American rising star, Tommy Paul.
